Louisiana-based televangelist Jimmy Swaggart — whose popularity peaked in the 80s — died Tuesday in a Baton Rouge hospital. He was 90.

The Pentecostal preacher and pioneer of televangelism had been in critical condition at a Louisiana hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest June 15.

Jimmy Swaggart is dead. The Pentecostal Televangelist who rose to power throughout the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s to become a fixture of American television before a string of scandals capsized his formidable empire, died today, per Swaggart’s Facebook page. No cause of death was immediately given. He was 90.
