MIT's decision to end its DEI office comes amid a probe by the Trump administration investigating the school for engaging in race-based practices in its administration of policies.
MIT has become the latest in a string of elite American universities to distance itself from the idea of diversity, equity and inclusion as President Donald Trump continues his anti-DEI agenda.
MIT President Sally Kornbluth said that while diversity programs will be restructured, the community “remains deeply committed to the pursuit of inclusive excellence."
MIT President Sally Kornbluth announced Thursday the closure of the school's Institute Community and Equity Office, as well as other reforms.
However, MIT will "shift" its "focus to community building at the local level," Kornbluth said. "The office’s signature programs will join other MIT units where they have a natural fit: The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty will take on the Department Support Program and the MLK Visiting Professors and Scholars Program," she added.
