Italy freed Iranian businessman Mohammad Abedini whom it was holding on a U.S. warrant in connection with a drone attack in Jordan in which three American service members were killed and more than 30 were injured.

Iranian businessman Mohammad Abedini, who was detained in Italy at the request of the United States following a drone attack that killed three Americans, has been released.

The United States says Mohammad Abedini provided technology used by Iran in a drone strike that killed three service members in Jordan last year.

U.S. prosecutors argued on Tuesday that an engineer could flee to Iran if he was granted bail while awaiting trial on charges related to a deadly drone attack on a U.S. military base in Jordan carried out last year by Iran-backed militants.

Mohammad Abedini had been detained over his alleged involvement in the 2024 drone attack on Tower 22 in Jordan, which left three American service members dead.

The release of Mohammad Abedini follows Iran's recent freeing of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, sparking speculation that Sala may have been a bargaining chip.
