Kenya’s president has nominated the country’s interior minister as his new deputy. The nomination came hours after Rigathi Gachagua was overwhelmingly voted out as deputy president in an impeachment motion tabled in parliament over allegations of corruption and ethnic division.

Kenya's senate voted to dismiss Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office by impeachment on five out of 11 charges levelled against him on Thursday, in an unprecedented move that risks pushing the country towards a political crisis.

President William Ruto's nominee, Kithure Kindiki, a 52-year-old academic turned political heavyweight, had been among the front-runners floated by political analysts after the Senate voted to remove Gachagua late Thursday.
