The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating why multiple commercial flights about to land at Reagan National Airport, near Washington D.C., repeatedly received midair collision alerts when there were no other aircraft nearby.

The FAA said that several flight crews inbound to the Reagan National Airport reported onboard alerts when no other aircraft were nearby.

The tragic midair collision at Reagan Washington National Airport in January this year brought the focus on the congested airspace over the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented some restrictions around its airspace as the investigation into the crash continues.

Air traffic control audio indicates the alerts happened only miles from the site of January's deadly mid-air collision near Washington D.C.

It comes four weeks after a plane crashed into a helicopter as it came into land at the airport. The tragedy led to the deaths of 67 people.
