Tuskegee University student Sid Guynn hid under a car when he heard the gunshots that ripped across his Alabama campus amid homecoming celebrations, then ran back to his dorm, frightened by what sounded to him like a machine gun.

Tuskegee University fired its security chief after a shooting killed one person and injured 16 others on Sunday.

A man accused of having a machine gun at Tuskegee University during a hail of gunfire that left one man dead and at least 16 others hurt told a federal agent that he fired his weapon during the shooting,

The shooting, which also wounded 12 people, happened early on Sunday as crowds gathered at the historically Black school to celebrate the final day of its 100th homecoming week.

Jaquez Myrick was arrested for being in possession of a handgun with a machine conversion device. No one has been charged with the death or the injuries.

An 18-year-old "non-university individual" was killed and students were injured Sunday morning, the university said.

"Students are our greatest asset, and we will do everything possible to protect them," the university's president said.

Tuskegee President Dr. Mark A. Brown announced the changes after the shooting early Sunday morning at an on-campus celebration.

One person was killed and more than a dozen others were injured at Tuskegee University in Alabama early Sunday, the university said. Some of those injured are students.
