The Coast Guard's Air Station Detroit helicopter crew assisted on an ice rescue call Tuesday afternoon in Lake Erie, near Catawba Island State Park in Ottawa County, Ohio. A total of four people were found to be stranded on an ice floe after the emergency call was made about 4:30 p.

The Coast Guard launched a crew from the Marblehead USGS station and a helicopter from Detroit for the rescue at 4:34 p.m. on Jan. 28. Catawba Island Police, fire department and EMS plus Ottawa Ontario Fire responded, according to a Coast Guard press release. Additional information was not available on those rescued from the ice.

The District Five Command Center coordinated the rescue operation by directing the launch of a C-130 Hercules airplane and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City.

At 5:37 p.m., the Marblehead crew rescued three people and Catawba Island Fire crew rescued one person from the ice floe. The Air Station Detroit helicopter conducted an overflight shoreline search and ensured no other stranded ice fishermen were in distress.
