Apple isn't the only company that pulled this move this year. With the release of Wear OS 5 in July, owners of Google Pixel watches or Samsung Galaxy watches saw some older faces disappear. Most of this was due to Google doubling down on the Watch Face Format introduced in 2023, which made certain faces incompatible.
Apple quietly got rid of four Watch faces in watchOS 11, and furious users want them back
There doesn't seem to be any technical or functional reason as to why Apple would remove these Watch faces. So it's likely that Apple has made this shift to refresh and enhance the overall aesthetic and design language of watchOS, which is certainly more artsy and abstract than it used to be.
