Millions of Germans are voting Sunday to determine who will control the country’s government, with Germany’s center-left Christian Democratic Union (CDU) expected to garner the biggest vote share—and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) projected to nab a historic number of votes after garnering the endorsement of billionaire Elon Musk.

The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leads the polls with an estimated 29% of the vote, going by the exit polls, while the incumbent Social Democratic Party (SPD) is third with 16%.

Last month, he brought a nonbinding motion calling for many more migrants to be turned back at Germany's borders to parliament. The motion was approved thanks to votes from AfD – marking a first in post-war Germany which prompted opponents to accuse Mr Merz of breaking a taboo. He rejects the criticism.
