And I'm not saying VI/VIM should be removed, just that at least one other modern editor should be included by default in all linux distros and any remaining active Unix products at this point.
On Windows and OS/2: Brief Editor (originally created by UnderWare and later purchased by Borland) was one of my top favorites, along with (highly customizable) Qedit. Still use vi on Linux and Unix.
