Former Olympic gold medalist and world champion Lindsey Vonn is returning to skiing, she announced Thursday. She said in an interview with the New York Times that her return was not planned and that she only reconsidered after successful knee replacement surgery seven months ago stopped the pain that had prompted her retirement.

Vonn last competed in February 2019, NBC News reported. She won a bronze medal in the women’s downhill at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Sweden. She announced her retirement before that competition but still became the oldest woman to win a medal at a world championship.
