Strong third-quarter earnings results from Netflix and Intuitive Surgical led to massive 10%+ stock gains for both companies.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 36 points, or 0.09%, to end the session at 43,275.91, while the S&P 500 climbed 0.40%, to close at 5,864.67 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.63% to finished the day at 18,489.55.

The S&P 500 was 0.3% higher in afternoon trading and is lingering close to its all-time high set early this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 2 points, or less than 0.1%, a day after setting its own record , while the Nasdaq composite was 0.5% higher, as of 12:21 p.m. Eastern time.

The S&P 500 is on track to report 7% year-per-year earnings growth for the third quarter, according to estimates from FactSet.

U.S. stocks are rising toward records as JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and other big financial companies rally following better-than-expected profit reports.

The September retail sales report also surprised investors, while a drop in weekly jobless claims signaled that the U.S. economy remains strong.
