At least 121 people have been killed and 173 others are missing as Texas officials deflect questions over the state’s response to the catastrophic flash floods.Kerr County remains at the center of the disaster after the Guadalupe River burst its banks on Friday.

In Kerr County, home to Camp Mystic and other youth camps in the Texas Hill Country, searchers have found the bodies of 68 people, including 28 children, Sheriff Larry Leitha said.

Officials said more than 850 people had been rescued after a sudden storm dumped up to 15 inches of rain across the region.

The statewide death toll from the catastrophic flooding in Central Texas earlier this month has risen to 135 and dozens more remain missing, Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday.

Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and others have weighed in as search and rescue missions continue looking for survivors.

Officials defended their actions in the hardest-hit county, where no survivors have been found since Friday. Statewide, 173 people remain unaccounted for, the governor said.
