A National Geographic documentary crew may have found partial remains of the foot of Andrew “Sandy” Irvine, the famed mountaineer who disappeared on Mount Everest 100 years ago.

The find comes 25 years after Irvine's climbing partner George Mallory’s frozen body was also discovered on the Himalayan peak.

When a National Geographic documentary team discovered a boot and sock sticking out of a melting glacier on Mount Everest in September, they almost immediately recognized its significance as a clue to solve a century-old mystery.

The partial remains of a British mountaineer who might — or might not — have been one of the first two people to climb Mount Everest are believed to have been found a century after their ascent of the world’s highest peak.

Last month, a team of climbers filming a National Geographic documentary stumbled on the preserved boot, revealed by melting ice on a glacier. This boot was believed to belong to Andrew Comyn "Sandy" Irvine, who disappeared while attempting to climb Everest in June 1924 with his partner George Mallory.
