The prized Red Sox prospect’s call up to Major League Baseball came after Alex Bregman hit the injured list with what manager Alex Cora called a significant quad injury. Bregman said it’s similar to the injury he suffered during the 2021 season that caused him to miss two months.

The Red Sox are calling up heralded infield prospect Marcelo Mayer from Triple A Worcester. WooSox manager Chad Tracy told reporters in Worcester on Saturday that he’d delivered the news to the 22-year-old, whom Baseball America recently ranked as the game’s No. 9 prospect, before the team’s doubleheader at Polar Park.

Mayer learned he was heading to Boston for Game 2 of the doubleheader, but there was one problem: He couldn't find his keys.
