President Donald Trump will use an executive order Wednesday to bar transgender athletes under the federal Title IX law. That law bars sex discrimination at educational institutions that receive federal funds.

The U.S. House passed a bill, largely along partisan lines, that would ban transgender athletes from competing in women's and girls sports at schools and other educational institutions that receive federal funds.

The organization that governs high school sports in Massachusetts is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for allowing a transgender athlete to compete on a girls' team.

Joe Biden signed an executive order on his first day in office that interpreted sex as “gender identity" under Title IX, a move that protected transgender athletes from being discriminated against if they wanted to participate in a sport that aligned with their gender identity, not their sex assigned at birth.
