Ride service Uber opened an interest list on Feb. 5 for Austin users to join if they would like to ride in a Waymo autonomous car instead of a standard rideshare vehicle, according to a Waymo spokesperson.

The robotaxi space will heat up this year with both Uber and Tesla planning to launch their autonomous services in the coming months. Tesla plans to launch its own ride-hailing service and Uber has partnered with Waymo.

Uber customers can sign up to be on a Waymo "interest" list through the app. Service is expected to be available this spring.

Uber is to launch autonomous rides with Waymo in Austin but the rollout of Tesla’s robotaxis, and Waymo’s expansion into other markets, could hit Uber and Lyft.

Former Eventbrite CEO Kevin Hartz told his employees at A Star Capital that they should take Waymos only because they provide better value.

"Life is long, but we would love to partner with them," Dara Khosrowshahi said on Friday about Tesla's Cybercabs.

By February 2025, the service has expanded to nearly 80 square miles, and Waymo began testing its driverless operations on the freeways. Initially, freeway rides will be available only to Waymo employees, with plans to gradually expand access to the public, just as they did with non-freeway routes.
