Germany’s development ministry says it will suspend new financial commitments to Rwanda over that country's alleged support of the M23 rebels in neighboring eastern Congo.

Germany has become the latest European nation to suspend financial aid to Rwanda for backing the M23 rebel group that’s seized huge swathes of neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

On Tuesday, Germany halted the aid, saying it is reviewing its existing commitments in response to Rwanda’s role in the conflict in Congo. "In coordination with partners, Germany will further restrict bilateral cooperation with Rwanda," a statement by Germany said.

Rwanda, which has repeatedly denied supporting M23, criticised Germany's move, arguing that it disregards security concerns in the region, particularly the activities of the DRC-backed FDLR militia.

A week after the announcement of British sanctions against Rwanda for its involvement alongside the M23 in the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kigali is complaining about what it sees as the UK's "betrayal".
