NASA and Russian space officials are at odds over the significance of a long-standing air leak aboard the International Space Station. The leak, originating from a Russian module, has reportedly persisted for about five years.

The ISS is aging. Zvezda and the PrK launched in July 2000 and will mark a quarter-century in orbit next year. NASA wants to keep the space station operating until at least 2030, while Roscosmos, Russia's space agency, has committed only through 2028.

Roscosmos and NASA are the principal partners in the ISS. They continue to collaborate for policy and technical reasons (the ISS cannot be broken apart, for example) in the wake of the internationally condemned Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which severed most international space relationships with Russia.
