If the margin in a race for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court remains below 10,000 votes, the runner-up could demand a recount.

The race for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court — with implications for the future of the state’s jurisprudence as well as future political control of the judiciary — remains too close to call.

Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs, a Democrat, is running to keep her seat against Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin, a judge on the Court of Appeals.

The N.C. Board of Elections said there are still 15,176 mail ballots left to count in the state Supreme Court race. They are from 87 of the state's 100 counties.
