ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has fired five ministers and appointed seven new ones in a major cabinet reshuffle aimed at making his administration more efficient, his office said Wednesday. The shake-up comes during worsening economic hardship and frustration with the administration in Africa’s most populous country.

The newly appointed ministers, who would still have to be confirmed by the Senate, are Nentawe Yilwatda, Muhammadu Dingyadi, Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu, Jumoke Oduwole, Idi Maiha, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, Suwaiba Ahmad.

The much-anticipated cabinet reshuffle was announced on Wednesday as President Bola Tinubu scrapped two ministries, merged two others and created a new ministry.

Nigerians have been calling for a major shakeup to address the country's pressing issues, such as economic stagnation, insecurity, and infrastructure decay. President Bola Tinubu recently reprimanded some of his ministers for their lack of performance and reassigned new persons to fill the void.

The Presidency has made some clarification regarding President Bola Tinubu’s reshuffling of his cabinet. Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said ministers were not sacked but discharged.
