The press office for the Vatican said Sunday that Pope Francis was able to rest overnight as he slowly recovers from double pneumonia after initially being hospitalized for bronchitis.

In a brief statement shared on Monday morning by the Holy See Press Office, it read: "The night went well; the Pope slept and is resting”

The Vatican has reported that Pope Francis remains in critical condition as of Sunday, battling pneumonia and a complex lung infection. The 88-year-old pontiff's condition has taken a turn for the worse, with blood tests showing early signs of kidney failure, though he remains alert and responsive.

The kidney ailment appears to be in an early stage, the Vatican said, adding that the pontiff is still receiving high flows of oxygen for his respiratory illness.
