Recapping strong storms that blew through central Iowa

Severe storms rumbled across central Iowa overnight Thursday, with one system producing a tornado in Guthrie County. WHO 13 viewers sent in photos of the reported damage from the storms. More storms are on the way Friday afternoon and evening.

Severe thunderstorms are expected Friday afternoon and evening across the Midwest to southern portions of the Great Lakes region, accompanied by a risk for damaging wind gusts, hail and some tornadoes.

Storm damage is delaying a family's homecoming, pushing their return back despite months of rebuilding efforts.

The overnight storms in central Iowa led to a train derailment in Mitchellville. According to Mitchellville police, three empty train cars were awaiting a grain shipment at a nearby co-op. They were pushed about 200 feet down the track due to the storm's strong winds.

Omaha's Weather Leader has declared Friday an impact weather day with potential for scattered storms. Better chance for any strong to severe storms with strong wind and hail potential will be in northwest Missouri and southern Iowa. That's where the Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk area for severe activity as of Friday morning.
