Nintendo has announced that games for the Switch will be playable on its next gaming console. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said on Wednesday that the company had decided it would be “optimal” to include backwards compatibility in the successor to the Switch given its enormous popularity.

The Switch 2 is still nowhere in sight, but Nintendo promises that it hasn’t changed its announcement timeline for the new console. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said on Tuesday in an online press conference that a reveal of the new hardware was still on track for this fiscal year ending March 2025.

Nintendo will reveal the Switch 2 in the current fiscal year, even though sales of the original Switch have stagnated.
