A giant mural of Lowry has adorned the gable of a house in Portrush since his triumph in 2019, which – in itself – shows the impact the Offaly man’s win in the 148th Open on the championship’s return to the Dunluce links had on the community.
THE last of the men’s majors this season – the 153rd British Open – has been lined up at Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, starting on Thursday.
"Friday the whatever of July 2019," he said, dismissively referring to his second round the last time the event was on the Antrim coast. An event that started with an appalling tee shot and ended with McIlroy missing the cut. "Harry was there last week," he added, referring to caddy Harry Diamond.
World number one Scottie Scheffler is the favourite on golf betting sites, with local hero Rory McIlroy next on the market. McIlroy is aiming to follow in the footsteps of his good friend Shane Lowry, who was the champion golfer in 2019 - the last time Portrush hosted the tournament.
