Equity benchmark Sensex crashed over 600 points in intraday trade, while the Nifty 50 came closer to 23,500 on the downside.

The S&P BSE Sensex climbed 227.35 points to 77,847.56 by 11:39 am, while the NSE Nifty50 rose 51.20 points to 23,577.70. Despite the recovery, broader market indices remained in negative territory, reflecting persistent volatility on Dalal Street.

Indian benchmark indices are trading lower at noon. Both Nifty and Sensex are down 0.6%. The benchmark Nifty 50 will see volatility on Thursday's weekly expiry.

On January 8, strong backing from Reliance Industries prevented major indices from significant declines. Oil and gas stocks surged due to rising crude prices, while support from the IT sector and ITC share rebounds helped the indices recover to end the session flat.

Except Nifty IT, all the sectoral gauges on the National Stock Exchange fell, with the Nifty Media, Realty and PSU Bank falling the most. The broader markets underperformed the benchmark indices as the BSE MidCap and SmallCap ended 2.13% and 2.4% down respectively.

The Indian market closed lower on January 10 after a highly volatile session, with the Nifty falling below 23,350. The decline was driven by broad-based selling across sectors, except for IT stocks, which surged following TCS's better-than-expected Q3 results.

The Nifty 50 ended the session with a drop of 0.54%, settling at 23,442 points, while the Sensex wrapped up the session with a drop of 0.40%, at the 77,312 level. It was the mid- and small-cap stocks that continued to be hammered by investors sharply in Friday's session.
