Houston is preparing for a historic winter storm expected to bring up to 6 inches of snow, a rare event not seen in decades.

An unusual winter storm has blanketed Houston and much of Southeast Texas in a fresh coat of snow and sleet. How long will it be until roads are safe?

City and county officials encouraged people to stay off of the major roadways Wednesday, when the Houston region emerged from a rare winter storm.

A storm bringing snow, sleet and bitter cold to southeast Texas could drop as much as 8 inches of snow on metropolitan Houston.

Tonight looks very similar to yesterday with clouds, temps stuck in the 50s with spotty light drizzles and patchy fog. We'll get noticeably warmer Wednesday as a more humid south breeze returns - that will set the stage for scattered storms that could begin in the afternoon and will reach their peak by Thursday as a cold front pushes through Southeast Texas.

Tuesday's snow largely melted Wednesday as temperatures climbed from the teens into the 40s. Highs in the lows 50s are forecasted for Thursday and Friday, with temperatures reaching the 60s this weekend,

Thursday will bring a combination of muggy air, a cold front and a strong upper-level disturbance. Expect at least scattered storms and possibly a line of strong to severe storms, including the slight chance for a tornado or damaging winds of 60 mph+.
