Crews are battling the Turner Gulch and Wright Draw fires near Gateway in Mesa County. Evacuations are still in place, but some were downgraded to pre-evacuations.
The Turner Gulch Fire near Gateway has reached 15,286 acres as of Friday afternoon, but firefighting personnel have contained 34% of the blaze.
The Turner Gulch fire burning southwest of Grand Junction in Mesa County exploded late Monday night and early Tuesday, racing across 7,000 acres in a matter of hours and forcing new evacuations, according to fire officials.
Afternoon thunderstorms on the Western Slope have fanned the flames with gusty winds. Meaningful rain isn’t expected until Friday.

Yet more residents of Gateway have been ordered to evacuate from the area, according to a press release issued by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.
As the Turner Gulch Fire rages just outside of town, Gateway community members are concerned about the present and near future of the area they call home.

Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1 (RM CIMT 1) stated the crews are battling the blazes at a location where it’s easy for the flames to spread.
Firefighters continue to battle several wildfires raging on the Western Slope. The Turner Gulch fire nearly doubled in size overnight to about 14,000 acres with zero percent containment. The fire continues to spread in Unaweep Canyon and evacuations are in place along Highway 141.
Multiple resources from across the state, including a local Colorado Springs Fire Department crew, have responded to the Colorado Western Slope as wildfires continue to burn without containment.
