It would be the fifth U.S. Navy vessel named for Georgia's largest city. The first was a Confederate ironclad captured in 1863 and converted to Union service during the Civil War. The most recent was a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine that served from 1982 to 1999.

For the first time in 25 years, hundreds of young sailors with the U.S. Navy will travel aboard a vessel named after the city of Atlanta, the branch announced at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.

ATLANTA — A high honor today for the city of Atlanta, soon to be on the high seas. The navy has named it’s latest nuclear-powered attack submarine and it will be called the USS Atlanta. “This is the actual diameter of the submarine he was in,” Josh Carter said during a museum tour.
