A second winter storm in as many days will slam parts of the Midwest before rolling toward the East Coast. Major travel disruptions are likely.

A wintry mess was bearing down on mid-Atlantic states Tuesday with forecasts of significant snow and ice accumulations prompting warnings of potential power outages. Travel will become treacherous Tuesday through early Wednesday in much of Virginia and West Virginia the National Weather Service said.

A winter weather advisory goes into effect from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. on Thursday. The heaviest of the snow is expected between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning at 2:26 a.m. EST on Wednesday valid from 1 p.m. EST until Thursday 7 a.m. EST for Alpena, Alcona, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin and Arenac counties.
