Even the humidity in the air will make wood swell and since a polyurethane is a harder finish is more likely to crack because of the weather.

I tried natural bristle and foam brushes, the natural bristle kept leaving bristles behind, the foam still left streaks. I sanded down in between coats with 220.

Several weeks ago I finished some small (3"X1") pieces of exotic wood with Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane spray clear semi-gloss, per the instructions on the can. They hadn't dried in well over a week so I called Minwax and the CS rep determined the product I used was outdated.

Apr 30, 2016 · It will give you the protection you wish but if you wish to put more protection on it without darkening it any further you can put a clear interior oil based polyurethane over the top. Just scuff sand the finish with 220 grit or finer paper and apply another coat. You don't want to put a spar varnish over the top.

I sanded the indoor-side with a fine grit. With the door lying flat, I applied the first thin coat using a high quality natural brush and with the product diluted to 50% urethane/50% mineral spirits.

I called Minwax and the maker of Emmet's to no avail. Does anyone know if the two products are compatible. They application is red oak in the bed a of a 1955 Chevy pickup truck. Thanks for the help.
