An extremely well-known species, the American flamingo is found on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Flamingos live in large colonies, oftentimes numbering into the thousands of individuals. These colonies typically occupy large mud flats where loose mud can be easily moulded into mounds that the birds can use as nests.
