Many cultures and religious traditions had similar ethical teachings centuries before Jesus, but almost always in negative form (called the “Silver Rule”) - for example 600 years before Confucius wrote “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.” (Analects 15:23). HOWEVER, the uniqueness of Jesus’ golden rule is that it is in the positive form - Jesus flips it: “Do unto others…” This requires action, not just avoidance of harm and it has UNIVERSAL application including ENEMIES.
