It’s all because of a retained reflex called the STNR - symmetrical tonic neck reflex. It’s a reflex that splits the body in half from top and bottom, and it helps to allow babies to learn to crawl forward. When it doesn’t integrate, or mature, that leaves the person’s body movements at the mercy of what their head, neck, and eyes are doing. It’s extremely exhausting! It can be 10 times harder for people with this reflex retained to copy from the board, sit properly in a chair, ride a bike, etc.

Straighten Up: Is the STNR Reflex Impacting Your Child’s Posture? 🧠 Noticing your child slouching or resting their head on their hand? Happy Cat: Look up and arch the back inwards. Angry Cat: Then, reverse it, arching the back outwards. How strong are ATNR and STNR? Quick scale: slight arm drop = 1, halfway = 2, full drop or face to floor = 4. A 1 to 1.5 means we can start vestibular work and gently add convergence training 👀⚖️ Eye drift often points to upper brainstem, while Moro and TLR sit lower, so sequence matters.
