Amethyst, the violet to purple variety of quartz, is among the oldest gem minerals on record, known in jewellery and arts since Antiquity. Its name comes from the Greek “amethustos” meaning not-drunken, and has been associated with Bacchus (Dionysius) the God of wine and Methe, the goddess-nymph of drunkness. With known exhausted sources in Europe (Müglitz in Saxony and Auvergne in France), has been found in greater quantities in Brazil, specially in Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay (Artigas), Russia
