Following its victory over Africa’s largest and best-equipped army, the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front began preparations for a referendum to allow Eritreans to decide their future. Two years later, in 1993, Eritrea was formally welcomed into the international community after a referendum in which Eritreans overwhelmingly voted for independence.
