For many women in the late 19th and early 20th century, the temperance and suffrage movements were deeply intertwined. The 18th amendment, banning "the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors" in the US, was ratified on January 16, 1919. Women's access to the ballot would have to wait another year and a half.
