Early lunar orbiter missions revealed something unexpected. The Moon’s gravitational field is uneven, shaped by mass concentrations known as mascons. These anomalies were strong enough to perturb spacecraft trajectories, forcing NASA to reanalyze tracking data using the Deep Space Network.
