Ring-mail shirt, late 3rd or early 4th century AD. This piece of armour was found at Arbeia fort in South Shields. Its preservation is due to the fact that it was sandwiched between two layers of daub, which sealed it and protected it from oxygen and moisture. The daub had probably fallen from a building during a fire. It is on display in the fort's museum. | International Man of History
